Sleeping Under the Stars in the Moroccan Sahara — Erg Chebbi

Merzouga: Gateway to the Desert
The village of Merzouga, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, is the classic starting point for exploring Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco's two great ergs. The golden-to-ochre dunes, some exceeding 150 metres in height, burst suddenly from the reg (stony desert), creating a breathtaking contrast.

The Camel Ride at Sunset
We had booked a guided excursion through our YOU VOYAGE circuit. Mahcine, our Tuareg guide, was waiting at 4:30 pm with the saddled camels. The ride feels strange at first — a slow rocking back and forth — then you quickly drift into a meditative state.

The late-afternoon light transforms the dunes into shifting paintings: vivid orange at 5 pm, blood red at 6 pm, rose gold the moment the sun touches the horizon. We paused at the crest of a dune to photograph the long shadows and the absolute silence of the Sahara. The only sound: wind over sand.

The Berber Camp
The camp was made up of Berber tents of canvas and camel wool, furnished with woven mats and embroidered cushions. A central campfire, a musician playing darbouka and guembri under the stars, a dinner of mechoui (roast lamb) and vegetable couscous.

But what struck me most was the night itself. Far from any light pollution, the Milky Way was visible to the naked eye with a clarity that takes your breath away. For the first time in my life I recognised constellations I had only ever seen in astronomy textbooks.

Sunrise
Waking up at 5:30 am was entirely worth it. Alone at the top of a dune, in the sharp pre-dawn cold, I watched the light arrive gradually — first colouring the crests pale pink, then gold, then fire. In under thirty minutes the desert had woken up, and already the heat was returning.
